PASTOR JOHN'S LETTER

Dear Session and beloved Congregation of Formosan Presbyterian Church,

Greetings and blessings in the name of our Savior Jesus Christ, who has made us members with Him of the Father’s covenant family and in whose footsteps we follow sharing the gospel by the power of the Holy Spirit. As always, I rejoice and give thanks to God for all the joys and challenges of having been called to serve as your English Ministry pastor for these four plus years.

I am writing, however, to inform you that I have received and accepted a call to serve as a Chaplain Officer in the United States Navy beginning in August. I am resigning from active ministry at Formosan PC on June 20, 2008 to allow me sufficient time to visit my family and make the necessary preparations for my move to training camp in Rhode Island. I will use my remaining vacation days to the end of June, and I would ask that my accumulated study leave account be transferred to the administrative oversight of the Presbytery of New Covenant. Both Mike Cole, our Presbytery Executive, and Michael Chen, our new Taiwanese Pastor nominee, have been aware that I was likely to accept this new call if it came through.

God has put a burden on my heart to serve our country in a time of war and by sharing the good news of God’s love with the men and women whose lives are on the line in our armed forces. I hope that you will continue to pray for me as I know you have been praying for me as your pastor.

Just as God is calling me to a new type of service, I know that God is calling FPC to wonderful new spiritual renewal, ministries and missions. Jesus Christ is the head of the church, and we are always safe and secure and successful when we prayerfully keep our eyes and our hearts fixed on him.

With full confidence in God’s sovereignty and love,

The Rev. John W. Potter
